Medicare and Mental Health Care Plans

What Is a Mental Health Care Plan?

A Mental Health Care Plan is a document your GP creates that entitles you to subsidised psychology sessions through Medicare. Here's how it works:

  1. 1. See your GP and discuss your mental health concerns
  2. 2. Your GP creates an MHCP, a simple form outlining your presenting concerns and goals
  3. 3. You bring the MHCP to your first psychology appointment (or your GP sends it to us)
  4. 4. The Medicare rebate is claimed on your behalf. You pay the gap fee ($90.95) and the rebate claim is submitted to Medicare
  5. 5. You get 6 subsidised sessions per calendar year. After you use those, you can ask your GP for a referral for 4 more (total 10 per year)

Do I Need a Referral?

You can self-refer and book directly as a private patient at the full $240 per session. With a Mental Health Care Plan and referral from your GP, the Medicare rebate brings your cost down to $90.95 per session.

No referral yet? Call your GP and ask for a Mental Health Care Plan. It's a straightforward process, most GPs can do it at a regular appointment or over the phone.

How We Process Your Rebate

After each session, the Medicare claim is submitted directly. Medicare sends the rebate ($149.05) to Mindwise, and you pay the gap fee ($90.95) by card at the end of your session. You don't need to do anything. It's seamless.

Private Health Insurance

If you have private health insurance with psychology coverage, you may be eligible for a rebate. Here's what to do:

  1. 1. Check your policy. Call your insurer and confirm you have psychology coverage and what the rebate is.
  2. 2. Let us know. At your first appointment, tell us you'd like to claim through private health insurance.
  3. 3. We'll provide an invoice. You can claim this with your insurer for reimbursement.
  4. 4. Timing varies. Most insurers process claims within 2–4 weeks.

Important: You cannot claim both Medicare and private health insurance rebates for the same session. Choose one.

NDIS

Mindwise accepts NDIS funding for self-managed, plan-managed and agency-managed participants.

  • Session fee: $240 for 50 minutes, invoiced to your plan
  • Line items: Typically "Improved Daily Living" or "Improved Relationships", check your plan to see what you have funded.
  • Invoicing: After each session, an itemised invoice is sent. Plan managers or self-managed participants submit to NDIS for payment.
